Santa Ponsa beach has clear, warm water and white sand and offers safe swimming, so it´s no wonder that tourists flock here every year.
The main beach is only a short walk from the Holiday Park Apartments and it is reasonably large and in recent years has been extended with imported sand. It is at street level and easily accessible for the less able and wheelchair bound. It is sheltered from the road with a stunning promenade full of pine trees which can also provide a welcome shade from the sun on very hot days. The beach is run on a flag system, so if the red flag is flying – do not swim. During the summer season there is a continual presence of lifeguards from 10:00 to 18:00.
There is daily litter collection and manual cleaning service on the beach itself and up-keeping with the islands reputation for cleanliness, the council also conducts weekly analysis of the quality of the water and analysis of the sand.
Santa Ponsa beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, which means it adheres to the strict rules and standards that the system dictates.
It has also been awarded the prestigious “Q” for European Quality. This is given for the high quality of sea water and sand at the beach in conjunction with the great facilities available at and around the beach area. At the time of writing there are only 2 beaches in the whole of the Balearic islands that have this award, and Santa Ponsa is very proud to be one of them.
All this plus a weekly mechanical cleaning of the sand ensures you are guaranteed healthy bathing at the beach. There are a number of showers located along the beach which are ideal for washing off the sand before getting dressed, or for just cooling off after the hot sun.
There is a tourist office and first aid centre which is located along the promenade.
Handy note: the word beach in Spanish is playa, so if you see signs reading Santa Ponsa playa, you know where to head. Remember! Be sun savvy: the sun is at it´s hottest between noon and 4pm. each day. Take care to use the correct sun protection!
Along the main streets surrounding the beach there are plenty of restaurants to choose from which offer take away food such as McDonalds and Burger King. There are also sandwich bars, restaurants and coffee bars.
There are three beach bars located directly on the beach serving cool drinks, ice creams and snacks. They also have public toilets and you do not need to be a customer to use the facilities.
Santa Ponsa beach is home to a number of beautiful parakeets. Their bright green plumage is hard to miss and it is worth taking a walk along the promenade to catch a look at these amazing creatures at any time of the day or night.
There is a wide range of activities to choose from on the beach such as pedal boats, banana boats and jet ski hire, of course charges apply.
For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there is umbrella and sunbed rental at a cost of 3.60 Euros (as from 2011) each per day, available directly on the beach. The vendor should give you a little ticket as a receipt to prove that you have paid.
The main beach can get crowded, so if you are looking for peace and quiet then it is worth taking the short 15 minute walk to the small beach around the corner. Unlike the main beach it does not offer any activities but there is a mobile library rental service which offers plenty of books in a wide range of languages plus the daily newspapers. There is a playground for children just across the road and with shallow water it is perfect for families with young children and it has a designated area where you can play volleyball and you can just wait your turn and join in with people playing.
All in all Santa Ponsa is a great place to enjoy a holiday. With the sun, the beach and the fabulous location, it is hard to beat.
